HOUSES OF ARTISTS IN SAXONY

COMMON GROUND

Houses of Artists regard theirselves as places and institutions for the free and all-encompassing fulfillment of artistic creativity, mediation and its presentation of art to the public. Houses of Artists consider it their responsibility to provide working and acting without major financial limitations. Many concepts try to combine this realization with alternative ways of living. With the help of government subsidies and sponsoring, some houses have achieved to get internationally active, which refers mostly to exchange programs and scholarships for artists.

In the mid 19th century, artists from Germany and all over Europe started to team up and to found special colonies, the so-called "Künstlerkolonien". The best-known ones are Worpswede, Ahrenshoop and Schwaan in Northern Germany. In the 20th century, this tradition became re-animated in order to allow free development for modern forms of arts. After the end of the Cold War, many artists benefited from the new leeway and potential in East Germany. In many cases, new activities grounded on already existing private initiatives and actions. Historical buildings – and, to some extent, also landmarked buildings like mills, farmsteads or brownfields – were restored and converted to new living space.
